First Birthday

I'm pretty sure that the 1st birthday is really for all of the adults, and not really for the baby. I mean, we are the ones who act ridiculously happy and excited as the gifts are opened and the cake is eaten. Don't get me wrong, Aaron obviously had a great time...

...but the reason for the celebration is lost on him. To him it is just another day that he gets to spend with Mommy, Daddy, and all of these other crazy people who he sees sometimes but isn't always sure about right away. There are also these super colorful boxes that seem to have new toys inside of them. Mommy can do all of the hard work opening everything, he will just inspect everything after she is done.

Aaron's party was wonderful. Jared's parents were nice enough to host for us, as our place is too small (especially for the 17 people who showed up!). We enjoyed a BBQ and socializing. Aaron enjoyed having so many people there to walk him around the house because Mommy and Daddy will only do it for so long before they get tired. Here he is walking around with my Grandparents, who traveled all the way from New Mexico just to be there for his birthday.

Aaron then sat in the middle of the floor to open his gifts. As I mentioned before, he lasted through one gift sitting with me, and then he was off to climb onto, and play with the toys that were yet to be opened. He immediately loved his Elmo Plane from Grandma and Grandpa King.
He really does love it, I promise. He just gets super serious when he is trying to figure things out. There was an unfortunate incident involving those wings, however. He tried to lean on one without realizing that they move and got quite the scare when he started to fall. But as soon as I picked him up he pointed right back at the plane, so he hadn't held that grudge for too long.

One thing about this birthday business that Aaron wasn't too sure of was this "smash cake" thing. He poked at it, like he does most new things, and gave his finger a perplexing look when the frosting stuck to it. A few pokes later and he finally tasted the frosting. But that was about all he was interested in. I had to feed some more frosting to him, and get myself messy as I searched for the actual cake part. He maybe took 3 bites total of the cake. And he likes to rest his hands on his legs, as you can tell by the placement of the frosting...

After the clean up - which may or may not have involved Daddy turning the bath water on before it had a chance to get warm and making one little boy very unhappy - it was definitely nap time. It has been a long an adventure filled day for that little dude.

How did you make his birthday cupcake? Is it made out of candy?
